This blog is going to the dogs, Day 11

Missy Kay

Given the temps predicted for NYC today (and the humidity) I'd like to be in that pool with Miss Missy Kay!

LOL. What's not to love about this? Thank you, Missy Kay (and your human), for brightening up my day.

High humidity and temps here in the Midwest too, so I'm ready to sit in the kiddy pool with her and share some conversation and cold splashing.

Splish splash Missy Kay. Just what we need round-these-parts: pool, water and wet dog. Love it.

I adore this pic! And kudos to Miss Missy Kay's owner for giving her a kiddie pool! This is the recommended therapy for dogs who love the water, and maybe don't live close enough to catch a swim. It looks to me like she's been dunking her head in.

One of our Yorkies we lost in 2012 loved the water hose. I wonder if Miss Missy Kay was trying to get at the hose? With our Yorkie, Kiwi, we couldn't try and wash any vehicle if she was outside. She would jump like crazy until we pointed the water stream towards the ground, and she would then chase wherever it hit. If we put the mouth of the house close to her, she would charge at it, mouth wide open, and let the water hit inside while acting like she was trying to bite it. The funniest thing I'd ever seen. Here she is "guarding" The Hose and Kiwi (just in case it comes alive)

Oh. And I meant to say - notice the squirrel who photobombed this pic? Too funny!

It's been so hot'n'humid here that I bought a bird bath top and placed it on the septic tank cover. AND THEY LOVE IT! There's one robin who gets in and immerses itself several times. I used to have a bird bath and its pedestal, but the birds wouldn't go near it. If I can get a picture of the birds using it, I will post it.

Oh what a cutie! She just looks like a happy little muppet dog (and I mean that in the best way possible). We've thought about getting a kiddie pool for Elka but like many things, haven't gotten around to it. Our summers are typically punctuated with rain, liberally, which she will not go out in.

Donna: I did notice the squirrel!

I imagine a lot of people will be envious of that pool today. This is the kind of weather I enjoy, though.

See, now I get it, after yesterday's post and all you dog lovers explaining dogs and water to me. Thanks again! :)

Hmmm... 2Ns mentioned splash, pool, water, wet, and dog. Five words. Whaddaya say? Flash challenge? 100 word story using those words (usual restrictions). No prizes, but you can post as many as you like. Here's one to get us started:

Lisa's eyes bugged at the display.

"What do you think?" said Nigel.

"They're amazing," Lisa replied. She pointed to a diamond necklace with a large sapphire in the center that sparkled like water under the store lights.

"I'll take it," Nigel said to the lady at the counter.

"You sure?" Lisa's cheeks flushed.

"I love to splash out on my best girl!"

Nigel kept the necklace in its box the whole ride home. Lisa thought he was teasing her. When he got out, a shaggy dog, wet from the pool, bounded up.

"Hey, Missy! See what daddy has for you!"

Aw. That is one happy dog.

The squirrel looks like an ornament maybe? it's hard to see in photo. I just know none of the squirrels around here would get that close to my dog!

Missy Kay might say, "Yeah, I'm having a bad hair day, but no worries...it's cool!"

What a lovely little dog. Humidity is the natural order here in the South. My dog doesn't like moisture. If the grass so much as has dew on....squirrel!

Miss Missy Kay, you are a summer poem: A pool, a hose, and green, green grass. And a wet, wet dog with a little bit of sass.

Love this photo. Missy Kay is a total charmer!

Lennon Some squirrels don't have a lick of sense, or they're too young to have gained that canny survivability. We've had one run right under Elka's nose while we were walking down the sidewalk (but she may only chase squirrels in the back yard, never on leash. She gets it. Thankfully).

Fun picture. Brightened my morning. Missy Kay looks lovable and energetic.

I love ot when a dog's name incorporates a title like Miss/Missy, it's sure to make me smile.

Here's my second animal story for the week. My dad, a lifelong dog person, decided to get a cat because he was getting on in years and thought a cat would be easier.

A bachelor at this point in his life, he insisted on an all-black cat and gave it the manly name Blade. This, he thought, made the percived indignity of a man owning a kitten not so bad.

Upon meeting the cat, kiddo immediately dubbed the 'Mr. Bladey', a nickname that's stuck ever since.

Pretty sure this one's my spirit animal. :)

Missy Kay looks like she's having lots of fun! My friend recently got a puppy who HATES the water. He stares at his paws like they've betrayed him when they get wet in the kiddie pool. And then he drinks from it.

What a great dog, smile and picture! Miss Missy Kay looks like a lot of fun to hang out with.

Perfect summer picture. Happy dog, sparkling water. And I did notice the squirrel because I was admiring the landscaping, But I think it might be yard art. Real, or statue?

Colin: Nigel is truly in the dog house now!

Cheryl said...

My vote: squirrel is not real. The proportions are off.

Beth Carpenter said...

I love this photo. Missy Kay couldn't be happier if she were in an infinity pool in Beverly Hills.

Cheryl, I agree. The squirrel is too small unless the blocks are bigger than I think. It's a good likeness, though.

What a happy pooch!

My sister's lab cross loves kiddy pools. She also loves bubbles. When someone's out in the yard making soap bubbles, she goes nuts chasing and catching them. She'll come in the house with a wet, soapy - and very happy - face.

The statue is a non-commissioned piece from Ace Hardware, installed to commemorate the Squirrel Uprising of '09. After winning a 5-hour stare down from the branch of a maple, Rocky the Mocking Squirrel took a victory lap across the top of the fence then ... well ... beyond the fence is an intersection. Let's just say, Rocky is now gnawing through electrical wires in the great attic in the sky. Oddly, Missy Kay shed no tears.

Yes, Donna, the hose never gets old.

Fun moment of the day: I went to the library's website to request Kari Lynn Dell's new book, Reckless in Texas, and I had to get on a waiting list!

"Colin, you still wondering if we like to swim? Please, stay skeptical. I can stay in here alllllll day."

Cheryl said...

Oh, Catherine, that is hilarious and sad. We love our squirrels; their antics with the bird feeders last winter were legendary.

Craig F said...

When is she going to do a Pepsodent commercial? That smile is a heart melter.

I can tell the Yankees from here. The red squirrel up there is almost three times the size of the grey squirrel we have in the south. That means that grey squirrels can get into anything. The harder you try to keep them out of something the more determined they become. I haven't beaten one yet. That is until the local cats decided we were suckers.

BJ Muntain said...

Poor Rocky, we hardly knew ye... yet you had it coming. Sorry.

Great story, Catherine!

Squirrels taught my friend's kitten to climb trees. The kitten had never tried, until this squirrel kept mocking her from the tree. So she ran up the tree, and fell. The squirrel mocked more. She ran up farther and fell. The squirrel mocked more. This squirrel's fate isn't as well known as Rocky's, but I don't think it included a long life...

I was hoping the OP (Catherine!) would emerge. Funny squirrel story...ha! "Non-commissioned piece." That made me snort laugh.

Like Craig said, they can get pretty big down here. We're not talking dog size - well, maybe Little Dog's size. And b/c Little Dog doesn't chase them much, they get just about that close to him. Some will even keep eating while he walks around the yard. His threat level to them? Somewhere between 0-1.

No takers for the flash challenge (see my first comment)? Well, okay... maybe y'all prefer caption challenges. :)

Colin Smith said...

My caption for today: "Hey! I thought you said there was a bone in here?!"

Well below freezing here this morning, so this photo makes me shiver! Looks like Missy Kay is one happy pup though. I have to say, freezing temps never stop my boy from jumping in (although it does speed up the 'getting out' bit).

BJ Muntain said...

Hey AJ. How cold does it get where you are? I'm just wondering how it compares to Canada.

Catherine, what a cutie! As much as our labs LOVED swimming and all things water, they unanimously HATED the garden hose. You've never seen such big babies as when it was time for a bath in the back yard.

I once had a small stone rabbit sitting at the edge of my garden. Cute little thing. Until Quincy the Wonder Dog bit off its ears and a leg. Stone. That dog tried to eat everything. I used to worry we'd have to take him to the vet and for some reason he'd need x-rays and I'd be at a complete loss to explain the contents of his digestive tract.

BJ Muntain said...

KD: Little Girl Dog has had x-rays a couple times to see if her tummy troubles were caused by eating staples or other small metal bits. They weren't. But when she had her dental, the vet found a metal clip stuck behind her teeth. We don't know how long it was there...

Beth Carpenter said...

I'll play, Colin. Am I allowed to say I laughed out loud at your story?

Rowdy shook, splashing water on Laura’s bare skin, the wet dog smell overpowering in the tiny closet.
“Where’s Laura?” someone asked the crowd at the pool. Laura had planned on a private afternoon tanning before the party. How could she have fallen asleep? She’d barely had time to hide, much less snatch her bikini from the chaise lounge. It was a few steps away, in a shadowed corner. Maybe if she hugged the wall?

“Stay.” She was almost there when Rowdy decided to follow. Motion sensor lights flashed on. Everyone stared.

Laura waved to her Sunday School class. “Surprise.”

This photo made me smile - thanks, OPie!

It started as an incredibly wet month. Then it slowed.

Then it was back with a splash. It was like a bucket that tipped when the water filled it. The pool in the back yard disappeared because the whole yard was a mud puddle.

In hours the water covered everything. A shed floated past and Bill’s boat floated off the trailer. Then the motor started and it came our way.

It was our chance but she refused. It was too far away and the current too strong. I felt like a dog but I always thought she could swim.

I'm just being lazy, Colin. Doesn't take much time to create a caption, especially for some of these photos where the captions practically write themselves.

But a 100-word flash. You can't always tell, but I spend too much time on those. You make them appear effortless (even though I know they rarely are.)

Colin Smith said...

Ha! Very good, Beth! And yes, unlike the real contests, feel free to comment on other's stories (like I just did)--and thanks. :)

Actually, John, I think the caption thing is a great idea. We could do that every day. :)

Julie Weathers said...

Ha, I love that she has her own little kiddie pool. I figured that was a squirrel monument.

Catherine should get the license plate to go with it.

Beth Carpenter said...

Oh Craig. This made me shudder. In a good way.
